Nature Reserve of Val di Mello

Riserva Val di Mello (8)

On 27 January 2009, the Lombardy Regional Council approved the Nature Reserve of Val di Mello, creating the largest protected area of Lombardy.

The protected area was strongly supported by local people that, directly, was involved to protect the beauties of Val di Mello in an unique panorama. The „climbers“ have certainly contributed to all of this, identifying the particularities of the area already decades ago.

The Nature Reserve has been divided into three sub-areas, listed here in increasing levels of protection:

1. Nature Reserve of landscape interest (Orange)

2. Nature Reserve (Green)

3. Strict Nature Reserve (Red)

The management of the reserve has been entrusted to the Municipality of Val Masino, supported by the technical expertise of ERSAF-Lombardy.

The Strict Nature Reserve extends itself, on the left,  from the mountain area to  the path that conducts to Alpe Romilla and the access is only for authorized forestry personnel.

The Nature Reserve of landscape interest includes the valley floor with small villages, while the largest area is properly the Nature Reserve, which is crossed from the famous Rome Trail.
